More Compensation for Volunteer Bush Fire Fighters and other Emergency and Rescue Volunteers

Currently volunteer bush fire fighters, SES volunteers, marine rescue, volunteer rescue association workers and surf lifesavers do not receive the same compensation under the Workers Compensation (Bush Fire, Emergency and Rescue Services) Act 1987 as paid workers in NSW receive.

On 8 June 2022 the Motor Accident's and Workers Compensation Legislation Bill 2022 passed both houses of parliament.

When the Bill commences, it will even the playing field ensuring these volunteers have access to the same benefits as their paid counterparts.

These volunteers already have entitlements to compensation for medical expenses, weekly payments, lump sum compensation and death benefits.

When the Bill commences there will be additional access to early provisional payments for loss of wages and medical expenses, funeral expenses and costs of transporting the body, and financial assistance to return to work with an alternative employer and compensation for education and retraining for workers with high needs.
